The trailblazer's tale
A chronological narrative focusing on Skippo's journey, his career milestones, and his evolution as an artist.
Skippo: The long road from Lagos to Mill City
Before Afrobeats dominated global airwaves, artists like Lawal Sodeeq, professionally known as Skippo, were honing their craft on the streets of Nigeria. Since launching his professional music career in 2010, Skippo's journey has been one of persistence, growth, and unexpected turns, eventually leading his sound across continents to a small town in Oregon.
His career began with a bang, dropping his debut single "Egbori Pamo" in 2010, featuring Africana. This was quickly followed by "Shako" in 2011, establishing his presence in the Nigerian music scene. But it was his 2014 track, "Gbon Titi," and its subsequent remix with Africana and the legendary Reminisce, that showed his ability to collaborate and elevate his music.
Skippo's ability to remix and reimagine songs was further showcased with his refix of CDQ's "Indomie" in 2015, which caught the attention of many across Nigeria. The following year, his hit "Eko Lon Pebi (This is Lagos)" became a viral sensation, trending on Twitter and solidifying his reputation.
But Skippo's music is about more than just trending. It's about a message. In 2019, he used his platform to speak out against Xenophobic attacks with the song "Identity," promoting unity across Africa. His commitment to using music for good was again demonstrated in 2020 with "Mill City, Oregon," a song created to honor and unite the citizens of Mill City, where his songs were played on KYAC radio.
This bold move proved to be a success, earning him new fans and friends across Oregon. Later that year, he released "YU!", a beautiful love song that seamlessly blends his native Yoruba language with Pidgin and English.
